Sentidos do trabalho e comprometimento organizacional: um estudo de caso em um departamento da saúde de Palmeira das Missões/RS

In this study, the main objective was to analyze the meanings attributed to work and its interface
with the organizational commitment for employees of the Health Surveillance of Palmeira das
Missões. The research is classified as exploratory and descriptive of a quanti-quali nature and
the research method used was the case study. Eleven employees were investigated. For data
collection, the EBACO scale was used to measure commitment and a semi-structured interview
to investigate the meanings of the work. In addition to a documentary analysis and free non participant observation. It appears that for the investigated collaborators, a positive conception
for the term “work” prevails, besides, the collaborators dedicate necessary time to the work.
The main reasons that lead them to work are financial need and independence, personal
satisfaction, better quality of life and survival. Participants recognize the role of their work and
their contribution to society. The main meanings identified by the research participants were
that work enables satisfaction, doing what one likes, it is productive, it has purpose, it allows
survival, it enables continuous learning, the organization is recognized for what it does, there
is recognition from colleagues and superiors , it is useful, it gives results and does more than
requested, besides showing that there is a feeling of doing something useful that benefits
someone. The commitment found in the organization is affective and normative, in its basic
obligation for performance. As for the interface between meanings of work and commitment,
it was found that the commitments evidenced in the research with results above the average are
the affective and the normative in their base obligation for performance and meet the meaning
attributed by the participants to the work
