This study aims to reveal what might be the territorial impact caused by the implementation of
the National Defense Strategy in Rio Grande do Sul. The Brazilian Military Power is present
in the state of Rio Grande do Sul through the three armed forces subordinated to the
Department of Defense: the Navy, the Army and the Air Force. The institutional presence
among the most prominent armed forces in the state it is up to Brazilian Army (subject of this
study): that is present in the referred territory through its effective of 30,340 militaries, its
presence in 31 municipalities and its dozens of military units and every military. This defense
structure in Rio Grande do Sul is therefore significant in personal defense product, public
assets, organizational structure, educational establishments, maintenance facilities, hospitals
and laboratories, in addition to operational structures such as barracks and training camps.
The overall objective of the research is to assess the territorial impacts in the municipality of
Alegrete caused by the implementation of the National Defense Strategy in the face of
military organizations' relocation based in the referred municipality. The research is a critical
study of the impacts and a prospective analysis of the consequences of deterritorialization in
the municipality with the transfer of military organizations to the north of the country. The
study was delimited to the Brazilian Army structures based in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the case in the municipality of Alegrete by his prominence as typical city of the gaucho
interior and the significant presence of barracks in its area.
