Resumen
This work is an experimental research that consists in a study of case where the objective was
to verify the possible effectiveness of Functional Therapeutic Taping as an alternative
treatment utilized by occupational therapists in the control of edema in pacients with
traumatic orthopedics impairments coming from University Hospital of Santa Maria (HUSM).
The initial evaluation started from an structured questionary including edema measurement
with measuring tape and posteriorly, having the necessary inclusion criteria, the functional
therapeutic taping was applied. This evaluation procedure was repeated weekly for a period of
four weeks in the first case and two weeks in the second. Reduction of edema, increased
mobility of the affected segment and reduction of pain symptom were the results obtained. It
is observed that this resource can be utilized as a complementary treatment in the edema
reduction, because it presents positive results in the short term. In this way, it is understood
that this technique can be used by occupational therapy professionals, for it’s benefits
interfere in components of the occupational performance that influence the hability of doing
significant activities as the daily living activity.
