Resumen
Objective: The objective is to analyze the factors that trigger work stress in health
professionals who work in emergency medical services. Method: Systematic review of
literature using the Lilacs and MedLine databases to search for scientific articles. We
included cross-sectional or longitudinal studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish that
aimed to evaluate stress levels in health professionals working in emergency medical
services. Results: Nine transversal and two longitudinal articles were included. As a
result, in emergency medical services, passive work predominates, which is associated
with low demand and low control over the work process. In addition, a series of
environmental factors (poor working conditions, management activities and conflicting
interpersonal relationships) and personal factors (stable union and shorter service time)
are associated with work stress. Conclusion: Several factors are associated with work
stress; however, several are open to intervention. Thus, there is a need for policies to
improve the work environment and the empowerment of the health professional working
in emergency medical services.
