Resumen
The aim of this study was to evaluate the biodistribution of sodium
pertechnetate (99mTcO4), used in scintigraphic examinations, in Wistar rats
experimentally infected with the Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite
causing Chagas' disease and in rats treated for 30 days with the anti-T. cruzi
benznidazole. The percentage of radioactivity per gram (%ATI/g) of various
organs such as brain, heart, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon,
spleen, liver, muscle and blood was measured in an automatic gamma counter.
Comparing the controls with the treated group, it was observed that the
biodistribution of 99mTcO4 did not change in the organs of animals treated with
benznidazole. The rats infected with T. cruzi had increasing uptake of 99mTcO4 in
the blood and decreasing in the colon. Additionally, histopathological changes in
the colon were observed. In conclusion, the data show that treatment with
benznidazole in rats does not change the biodistribution of 99mTcO4 but the
infection by T. cruzi does it. This findings may result in potential diagnostic and
clinical implications. The completion of this study had multidisciplinary nature
with the involvement of biologists, physicians, pharmacists and statisticians.
