dc.description.abstract | Chlamydia psittaci is a highly zoonotic bacterium spread worldwide that causes psittacosis, one of the most important infectious diseases of psittacine birds. In order to determine the prevalence of C. psittaci in captive birds in Colombia, 343 samples from 177 psittacine birds of Centro de Recepción de Fauna Temporal del Convenio de Asociación N°131 IDPYBA – U.D.C.A were subjected to a conventional PCR which amplifies ompA gene (outer membrane protein A), for this purpose species-specific primers were designed; in total 166 samples belonging to cloacal swabs and 177 to faeces were analysed. C. psittaci was detected in 81,3% (144/177) of the population studied. Of the positive samples, 129 of 166 belonged to cloacal swab and 53 of 177 to faecal ones; being the probability of detection 8,15 times higher for cloacal swabs compared to faecal swabs (p<0.05). On the other hand, the technique for the identification of C. psittaci was standardized. In addition, this study reports for the first time the prevalence of C. psittaci in psittacine birds in captivity in Colombia. Although a seropositivity of 85% was previously reported using an indirect ELISA, detection of the agent using molecular techniques had not been carried out to date
