The purpose of this article is to analyze in light of the doctrine and international jurisprudence the crime of piracy, its constituent elements, definitions and classifications in order to elucidate the reasons why, today, this behavior is the only likely to be universally repressed via international accepted customs and thus conclude whether or not it is feasible to extend universal jurisdiction to other international crimes in which a State could be involved.
