Resumen
Introduction: Chagas disease is recognized by the WHO as a neglected tropical disease, being a long-standing public health problem in Latin America. Chronic Chagasic heart disease is the complication with the greatest burden of morbidity and mortality, and in this regard there are several factors associated with its onset and progression described in the literature. Objective: to determine the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy in the population of endemic areas in Colombia. Methods: this is an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study. A database provided by the INS was analyzed, which contains sociodemographic, medical, serological and paraclinical data of 112 patients residing in the municipality of Mogotes Santander; data obtained in 2015. A bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis was performed in order to explore associations of sociodemographic and clinical variables with evidence of Chagasic cardiomyopathy. Results: Multiple comorbidities and a family history of sudden death are factors related to the evidence of Chagas' heart disease in the population of an endemic area for Chagas' disease in Colombia. Conclusions: among the points of potential intervention in public health is to reduce underdiagnosis in the general population and in women of reproductive age; as well as the identification of patients who benefit from specialized assessment in the presence of various comorbidities and family history of sudden death; Applicable factors in population living in endemic area for Chagas disease in Colombia.
