Resumen
This paper explores whether the implementation of a horizontal collaboration model improves the logistics performance of GECOLSA, a company in the Colombian industrial sector. GECOLSA implemented this model in collaboration with NTS since January 2020, using a joint distribution centre in a free-trade zone in the Colombian Caribbean. GECOLSA expects a reduction in logistics and transportation costs in two years’ time. Using sales and cost information provided by the companies from January 2017 to December 2019 (2017-2019), two-year sales were forecasted through time-series forecasting; based on the forecasts and a periodic review inventory control model, inventory levels and orders were simulated for both the horizontal collaboration model and individual operation of both companies. Using the cost information provided by the companies in conjunction with the results of the simulation, this work shows that horizontal collaboration allows for reduced inventory levels and related costs. These results support previous claims regarding some of the benefits of horizontal collaboration. Owing to some limitations concerning information availability, some additional directions are recommended to complement this research.
