the literature and it is constituted as an important factor in children’s academic performance. OBJETIVE: the present study intends to carry out an initial approximation to the frequency of this disability in the public schools of a locality at Bogotá (Colombia). MATERIALS AND METHODS: teachers of preschool and primary grades gave us the information about how many of their students haven’t acquired a correct reading process. A survey was applied to know the degree of concepts related to the learning process handled by the teachers. Later a new survey was obtained to report the number of children who in their criteria had difficulty with the acquisition of reading. RESULTS: 110 teachers of elementary school reported to have a total of 3014 students, 836 of them presented difficulty in the learning of reading process given by slow readers and those with absence in the acquisition of the activities. The left-handed children are more prone to have these difficulties. CONCLUSION: data collected in this first approach show a high frequency of difficulty in acquisition of reading among the studied children that is not currently faced to avoid scholastic failure.
