One of the six main organs in the United Nations is the Security Council, whose primary responsibility is the maintenance of international peace and security, the promotion of friendly relations between nations, and cooperation among these states to the solution of the different problems, together with the development of and respect for human rights in accordance with international law, international human rights law and international humanitarian law.During 2016 the Security Council approved 102 resolutions, within the which the main thematic issues are: cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations in the maintenance of international peace and security; reform of the security sector; the fight for the prevention and rejection of violent extremism, and the promotion of peace; trafficking in persons in conflict situations; nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament; children, women and armed conflict; the consolidation and maintenance of peace; the protection of civilians in armed conflict; and threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
