In the last years of evolution of medical education, competency-based training has gained relevance, which starts from the concept of results-based education, referring to an organization from the description of the profile and then defining the steps to reach it. Models of this type are currently being proposed for the training of psychiatric specialists in other countries. An investigation was carried out to know about the frameworks of competencies and evaluative processes in psychiatric residencies from a theoretical position of a broad concept of competences, a search was carried out in academic databases on frameworks of competencies, education based on competencies and evaluation in psychiatric residencies with previously intended terms. Subsequently, the information found was analyzed and some categories were established that were explored through semi-structured interviews with which a proposal for a framework of competencies for the psychiatry program of the National University of Colombia is made. The defined competencies were: the psychiatrist in theory (know theoretically about psychiatry), the psychiatrist in practice (know how to apply knowledge), the psychiatrist in interaction (know how to communicate effectively), the psychiatrist in the context (be flexible and adapt to different situations) and the psychiatrist as a human being (being ethical and professional in performance and relationships)
