A quantitative comparison of the colombian civil wars, 1830-2010

Abstract

The article intends to complement the qualitative literature on the Colombian civil wars with a quantitative comparison of them. From an operational definition of civil war, ten civil wars are identified, and variables related with the duration, severity and size of the armed powers are presented. The conclusion is made by highlighting the peculiarity of postmodern civil wars like La Violencia and El Conflicto and the importance of quantitative studies to contribute with other visions of the civil wars in Colombia.

El artículo busca complementar la literatura cualitativa sobre las guerras civiles colombianas con una comparación cuantitativa de las mismas. A partir de una definición operacional la guerra civil, se identifican diez guerras civiles y se exponen variables relacionadas con la duración, severidad y tamaño de los poderes armados. Se concluye resaltando la peculiaridad de guerras civiles posmodernas como La Violencia y El Conflicto y la importancia de los estudios cuantitativos para complementar otras visiones de las guerras civiles en Colombia.
