| dc.description.abstract | Determining the processes underlying the organization and structuring of aquatic invertebrate communities and their applied potential to biomonitoring are some of the main challenges of applied ecology. This study collected information regarding the theory of the disturbance, its development in aquatic ecosystems and the results of several global investigations to show evidence and trends in the responses of the macroinvertebrate community to land use change generated by a different nature stressor and its relationship with disturbance theory. We highlight the multiple responses at the structural and functional levels of the macroinvertebrate community and the pivotal role that poses the identification of the community responses to different stressors. We evaluated the effects of factors exerts over the structure macroinvertebrate community at different scales in ten páramo rivers of the Chingaza National Natural Park. To include anthropogenic influence, the community response was evaluated on a disturbance gradient generated by livestock through descriptors of taxonomic metrics and composition of functional traits.
Our results showed that there is no relationship between the evaluated impact gradient and the changes in the taxonomic structure and functional traits composition of the macroinvertebrates community. The variability in both facets was related to the vegetation cover and water temperature, the local reach conditions such as current speed, bed substrate and conductivity. These results contribute to the knowledge of the importance of the ecoregional context in the assembly process of the páramo communities. Also, these results lead to rethinking the role of macroinvertebrates as biological indicators of disturbances in high mountain ecosystems. The dependence on the ecoregional and local context of each river suggests that other communities’ processes such as dispersal should be considered to improve the assessment of the integrity status of the aquatic invertebrate community.
