The overall goal of this thesis is to develop an intelligent hybrid system model to monitor physical variables using wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In support of the main objective, the thesis has the following secondary objectives: to integrate elements of DistributedArtificial Intelligence (DAI), and physical variable monitoring mech-anisms using distributed WSNs and to propose an intelligent hybridsystem model which can be implemented and validated through aprototype. To develop the model we went through a series of experiments with different types of networks. Intelligent agents were inserted at differ-ent nodes and energy consumption was measured taking into account the constraints of a WSN.
