The intellectual capital literature on education has provided evidence of growing academic interest in this area as a relevant field of research. However, in Colombia there are few works on intellectual capital and they are even scarcer in the higher education sector. In fact, the proposed measurement approaches have been developed mostly in the European context, which makes it difficult to adapt and application them to Colombian universities. Likewise, studies of an empirical nature on the interrelationships between the dimensions of intellectual capital (human, structural / organizational and relational capitals) and its effect on performance of universities have not yet yielded sufficient evidence. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to contribute to addressing this gap by proposing a framework for measuring intellectual capital, focused on the capabilities and performance of research in Colombian public universities. Equally, to explore the interrelations between the dimensions of intellectual capital and its effect on the generation of knowledge. To achieve these objectives, a quantitative and longitudinal analysis based on multiple case studies is carried out in the first phase of the study. In the second stage, structural equation models are used to check the validity and fit of the proposed model. The findings highlight the relevance of the measurement framework of intellectual capital in the function of identifying the development of research capabilities and performance, allowing a comprehensive and systematic visualization of the achievements. The hypothesis proposing a positive association between the dimensions of IC and the generation of knowledge were tested. In particular, human capital is indirectly related in a positive way to the generation of knowledge through relational capital, as well as through structural capital-relational capital. In this way, this research contributes to the two approaches to the study of intellectual capital in universities
