Background: Alteration in specific neuropsychological functions has been described in patients with schizophrenia. Mainly in executive functions and a lower degree of mentalization capacity, process that is directly associated with mind-wandering. The present study aims to assess the behavioral correlates of mind-wandering, executive functions and mentalization in adults with schizophrenia compared to a group of healthy controls. Methods: 20 patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia and 20 healthy controls matched for age and schooling were chosen. Patients and controls underwent a neuropsychiatric evaluation of mind-wandering, through a self-applied scale and an experimental task; a test for executive functions and a test that tracks the ability of mentalization or affective elements of cognition known as the interpersonal reactivity index. For patients with schizophrenia a measurement of the positive and negative symptoms through the PANSS scale was also applied. Results: Patients with schizophrenia show a lower frequency of mental wandering than healthy controls in an experimental task. Likewise, there was no significant correlation between the frequency of mind wandering and psychotic symptoms, but there was a correlation with the capacity for mentalization. Conclusion: Patients with schizophrenia have a lower ability to produce spontaneous thoughts that are not related to a task. This is associated with their performance in mentalization processes. In addition, mind wandering in schizophrenia is not related to the presence of psychotic symptoms or alterations in executive functions.
