//Abstract: Mercury is a polluting substance and, being present in the environment, it may represent a danger to public health. For which reason people can be exposed to this metal by consuming any type of contaminated organism such as fishes. In this work, the temporal space concentration of mercury in the striped catfish (Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum) in the Zapatosa swamp (Magdalena and Cesar departments), Colombia, was determined. Four samplings were carried out in a period of one year between July 2017 and June 2018, in four places (seasons) with different characteristics. The Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum was captured in fishing operations with the help of artisanal fishermen, using fishing gear such as trammel nets with different sizes of mesh eye. The sediments were collected in samples of 5 centimeters deep for granulometric analysis and organic matter. In addition, different environmental variables were measured in situ such as: pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Conductivity and Temperature, using a portable multiparameter probe. Additionally, transparency, depth, turbidity, ammonium, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates and alkalinity were measured. All samples were obtained in triplicate and geographic coordinates were recorded. In the total mercury analysis, the direct measurement method according to EPA 7473 was used. A total of 185 individuals were captured and none exceeded the value of the minimum catch size and the average length of sexual maturity (80 cm); All the individuals presented mercury concentration, in all the seasons and stations studied, however no significant differences were reported between the seasons, nor between the stations, but there were significant differences in the station -season interaction, the stations away from the rivers they presented the highest values and in the majority of the seasons they did not present significant differences (p 0.005). The stations near the rivers presented the lowest concentrations and tended to be different. The average concentration for mercury was 0.278 ± 0.14 μg / g, exceeding in some cases the maximum level allowed for consumption of the general population (0.5 μg / g) and approximately 70% had levels higher than 0.2 μg / g, which it is the maximum level allowed for consumption in the vulnerable population according to World Health Organization (WHO). The highest concentrations of Hg-T in fishes were found in periods of drought in which temperatures in the study area are high and methylation activity increases.
