Research on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) has been growing in the last two decades. However, most researchers in SSCM and companies have focused on how to manage Supply Chains (CS), through the implementation of incremental practices. In contrast, there are recent calls in the literature at the level of various social actors to make a “truly” sustainable supply chain management. Furthermore, on the available studies the relationship of companies with stakeholders outside the supply chain, particularly those with non-economics objective, has not been valued properly. Similarly, studies in SSCM have left behind small companies than can commit to a radical rethinking sustainable. Considering this, the objective of this research is to study how the integration between Colombian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with non-market stakeholders influences the development of practices of SSCM, especially disruptive practices. The study was developed using mixed methods. Firstly, this study uses an ‘explanatory sequential design’, starting with a quantitative phase, which allows the identification and selection of outstanding SMEs. This study uses a qualitative phase through a multiple case study. The results allow us to conclude that there are Colombian SMEs that design their SSCM strategy to achieve that “true” sustainability. The qualitative findings of the case study show that these focal SMEs display a ‘participatory’ governance model in their SC, exhibiting high integration with non-market actors especially the Base of the Pyramid, NGOs or government. We found that the mention integration supports, through specific causal mechanisms, the deployment of disruptive socio-environmental practices. Those disruptive practices are fair trade, inclusive business, organic production, circular economy, local supply and transparency. Future research could quantitatively contrast the mechanisms found in this thesis and study this same phenomenon with a multi-stakeholder approach and sustainable governance variables, such as centrality, complexity and density.
