The object of the present article is to analyse the impact of the elitist order on rotos (urban poor) and frontier inhabitants in the 19th and early 20th centuries, considering their part in the transformative colonisation of the Araucania Region. We sustain that this transformation was related to changes in the attitude of the elites to the non-Mapuche poor. We explain this phenomenon through analysis of a series of historical data and primary and bibliographic sources under an analysis of continuity and historical change.
