This paper wants to make a comparison of the dynastic changes in Portugal of 1383/85 and 1580. In both cases, the ruling dynasty extinguishes and the candidate with most solid dynastic rights is the King of Castile. In both occasions, he has to face a bastard rival. In spite of these similarities in 1385, the bastard obtains the throne while in 1580 it is the Castilian King, who is victorious. We compare the most important factors, which led to two so different outcomes. After defining the historical context in both scenarios, we analyse the support groups the candidates had in 1383 and 1580. Next, we compare the consequences the dynastic changes had in each case and finally we analyse the intents of legitimation and we explain why these were so more important in the case of 1385.
