Resumen
Introduction: Sexual dysfunctions affects 25 - 78% of women. Masturbation is a recognized tool in the management of sexual dysfunctions. However, its role in preventing these conditions is unknown. The objective of the study is to determine and understand the association between masturbation and female sexual dysfunctions. Methodology: Multimethod study, the quantitative component is an analytical observational study of retrospective cohorts with bivariate and multivariate analysis correcting the association for the significant variables; the qualitative component was based on grounded theory for the analysis of emerging categories related to the association. Results: 520 women were studied in the quantitative component and 11 in the qualitative component from November 2017 to November 2018. The incidence of sexual dysfunction was 23%. The bivariate analysis between masturbation and dysfunction was significant (RR = 0.6 CI 0.405-0.93), in the multivariate analysis a statistically significant association was not found (corrected OR = 0.67 IC 0.436-1.030). Significant risk factors were stress incontinence (corrected OR = 3.19 IC 1.144-13.4) and history of sexual abuse (corrected OR 7.48 IC 1.37-40.76) the protective factors were education level (corrected OR 0.806 CI 0.637-0.99) and single marital status (corrected OR = 0.802 CI 0.637-0.99). The multidimensional and multifactorial nature of female sexual dysfunction makes it difficult to identify absolute determinants for the condition. Discussion: more studies are required to expand the knowledge about the role of masturbation as a protective factor for female sexual dysfunction. Understanding dysfunction individually is the best approach to help these patients.
