Resumen
Introduction: Recent studies show that physical / leisure activity generates bene-ficial effects on the maintenance of cognitive function in older adults. Objective: Determine if physical activity compared to leisure activity has a greater association with the maintenance of cognitive function. Materials and Methods: A cohort study was designed, with 94 cognitively normal older adults, examined in 2012 and 2018 in a Hospital of Bogotá. We analyzed subjects with cognitive maintenance (73 with normal cognition) vs subjects with progression (21 with mild cognitive impairment), divided into a cohort with exclusive physical activity (14 subjects) vs exclusive leisure activity (26 subjects). The main association was determined by the CHI2 test. The results were adjusted according to the confounding variables, by means of logistic regression; the level of statistical significance was (p<0.005). Results: The association between cognitive maintenance and physical / leisure activity according to diagnosis was 0.6 (physical) and 0.56 (leisure), according to the MoCa test it was 0.4 and 0.2 respectively. The multivariate analysis found no relationship between cognitive maintenance and physical activity / leisure; as an incidental finding, a relationship was found between younger age and higher edu-cational level with cognitive maintenance (MoCa test vs age and educational level p 0.03 and 0.005). Conclusions: Physical/leisure activity it's not related to the maintenance of cogni-tive function of older adults with normal cognition in the studied sample.
