Building rapport and cooperative learning: Eliciting participation in the Chilean EFL Classroom

Artículo para optar al grado de Licenciado en Educación. The aim of this article is to prove whether the methodology of Cooperative Learning and the use of some classroom management techniques proposed by Epperson (2012) fulfill the goal of promoting students’ participation in the English class in a specific context. This research is a descriptive and qualitative analysis of a pedagogical intervention made in a Chilean classroom in Maipú, in an eighth grade of elementary school. This grade was chosen for being, according to some of their teachers and also the students themselves, one of the eighth grades of the school that participate the least in class. The intervention is based on the students’ preferences applied to one pedagogical unit, as stated in the Study Programs by the Minister of Education
