The development of the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) first gill-arch was studied from measurements in 18 organisms caught in Bahía Magdalena, B.C.S., México. The graphic analysis shows a relationship between the standard length and the length of each of the segments that compose the arch. This can be described by an exponential regression. The statistical analysis shows allometric growth be¬tween all three segments and their gill-rakers as a function of the standard length. When the length of the gill-rakers grows, so does the spiny interspace projections . No apparent relation was observed between the gill-raker size and the number of its spiny projections.
