T: Venous thromboembolic disease is a disabling disease, mainly affects individuals at production stage, is a disease usually diagnosed and treated in hospital emergency departments (ED). Its importance, both for its impact (pulmonary embolism) and prophylaxis need considering disease grade risk and identification of prevalent risk factors in AED. METHODS: The study universe consisted of patients of both sexes admitted to ED (observation and shock) in November 2010. Our main objective was: To determine whether in our emergency department is adequate given thrombus prophylaxis for VTE in patients with or without risk factors for it. RESULTS: We analyzed 67 patients who were 35 women and 32 men, of whom 6 patients (8.9%) were in the low risk group, 7 patients (10.4%) medium-risk group, 19 patients (28.3%) in high-risk group, 35 patients (52.2%) at very high risk group. (Graph 1) We note that the most common risk factor is age of patients is between 60 and 74 years of age as shown in Figure 2. Of the 54 patients that warranted initiating thromboprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism with only 14 patients (25%), thromboprophylaxis was initiated in the emergency department and the rest were 40 patients (74%) was left without thromboprophylaxis. CONCLUSIONS: In the Emergency Department of Medical Center La Raza is not given appropriate thromboprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism. It is urgent to establish a program to stratify by degree of risk to patients admitted to our department and to provide adequate thromboprophylaxis.
