The objective was to determine the epidemiology of acute pancreatitis in a general hospital of the IMSS in a period of 5 years, was motivated by the lack of recent studies, the latest records in 2005 performed at the Hospital General de Mexico, Hospital Gea González and the Central Military Hospital. It is a descriptive, observational and retrospective, inclusion criteria were: first event of pancreatitis, patients of both sexes, aged 16 years or older, confirmed diagnosis of acute pancreatitis by serum biomarkers-clinical or clinical-CT scan / ultrasound. In total 125 patients, 72 met the features. The information was obtained from the log entry and exit of patients (SIMO) to the emergency room, the variables were collected from clinical files were collected in a specific sheet prepared by the researchers, the data were processed using SPSS, the results are presented in tables and graphs. 50% of patients developed pancreatitis and biliary disease and more often in people over 65 years, these two factors determined the presence of most severe and the occurrence of early complications. This shows that the biliary etiology remains the main root cause of pancreatitis, the sociodemographic characteristics of this population does not vary with respect to those who receive services at public health units. It is important to prevent diseases carried bile duct and its definitive treatment in less time, improving patient prognosis
