The autotransfusion is a method that uses the patient is own blood volume replacement, in patients with active bleeding provided the chest and abdomen. It has many benefits, including low cost, easy implementation and minimal risk of contamination. Further more, this method does not rely on donor or blood banks, and is ideal for locations where there is little or no supply of the product. The objective is to clarify the benefits of autotransfusion and demonstrate its use in three dogs and a cat, who had traumatic splenic rupture and were subjected total splenectomy procedure. For all patients was abdominal cavity blood collected and reinfused during surgery, observing improvement in PAS parameters, SpO2, mucosal color and TPC. The cases demonstrate that intraoperative autotransfusion is a viable alternative in situations with acute blood loss, contributing efficiently for volume replacement, normal hemodynamic parameters and presenting few complications.
