Changes occured in the Brazilian countryside in the decade of nineteen seventies, gave rise to the development of non-agricultural activities in farming properties and also to an increase of women s participation in these activities. One of the main changes worth mentioning is the introduction of rural tourism. Thus the objective of this dissertation is to study the role played by women in rural tourism. In order te achieve this purpose, an enquiry was conducted in the region of Campos de Cima da Serra, in Rio Grande do Sul where eight women were selected and interviewed. The criteria of selection were two: the interviewee should be in charge of the family enterprise of rural tourism and this should offer accomodations to the guests. The interview schedule consisted of the following items: the woman s profile; characteristics of the farm and touristic activity; farm s economy and labour aspects; education; social relations; and the knowledge of public policies. The main results of the study can be thus summarized: rural tourism, as a new economic source tends to become a dominant activity in the region, instead of complementary one; tourism in rural areas brings about social, cultural and environmental changes in women s belaviour; it stresses woman s multifunctionality as enterpreneur and housewife. The study reveals also slower qualification of rural women and finally, a lack of informations regarding public policies and economic incentives for women and rural tourism. The research is original in the sense that it points to a new reality of rural women who administer their own affairs and contribute to the welfair of the family and the community.
