This study has a qualitative approach and aims to understand, from the perspective of the subject, what meanings attribute pain and how much it feels safe to express it. It was performed during the period from September to November 2018, in an inpatient unit for cancer treatment of a medium-sized hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Eight subjects (six men and two women), over 18 years old, with confirmed oncological diagnosis, that made use of alternative route of feeding. For the collection of information, a semi-structured interview (recorded and transcribed) was used, including the use of the Visual Analog Pain Scale (EVA) and the proposal that subjects represent pain through drawing, in addition to recording field. For the discussion of the information, the narrative analysis was adopted, whereby it is concluded that pain is considered an unpleasant physical experience and refers to the experience of a suffering of existential character, constituting as a threat the identity of those who need to live with it. His expression is not always clear and is subject to interference from perceived responses in the environment and beliefs associated with it. The importance of other studies on the subject is emphasized, as well as the need to favor the expression of the subjects, allowing their speech to give meaning and place to what is lived. To do so, the use of the Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS) and resources that stimulate creative potential can be a means of expression and intervention.
