It traced a timeline that extends from the first contacts between the Portuguese and the native communities even Republicans movements that promoted the separation between politics and religion. The LDB 9394/96 refers to the compulsory nature of the discipline in the basic levels of education, but also emphasizes its voluntary enrollment. It is the function of the School Management organizing strategies, since the decision by the function of discipline must pass through the area of interest of the school community. There is no possibility of establishing a national core curriculum for the course, since the government cannot decide on what is essential to know in relation to religious practices. Different subjects in the school environment were interviewed, a manager, a teacher and a student in three different schools in Santa Maria who contributed their perspectives, thus enabling knowledge and examine some examples of the problems surrounding the issue of the presence of Religious Education in high school.
