O dinheiro de Judas : um estudo das representações socio-culturais de judeus e cristãos novos no "Sermão de São Roque', do padre Antonio Vieira

Abstract

This research aims at describing the jewish’s and the marranos’ socio-cultural representations in “Semão de São Roque”, preached by Father Antônio Vieira in 1644. Firstly, we dealt with the relations between history and literature, emphasizing the contributions of New Cultural History to our work, since we have a literary document as our studey object. Secondly, we characterized the literary style “baroque” and the sermonistic text, looking for contextualizing the corpus of this work. Afterthat, we drew up the jewish’s and the marranos’ historic situation in Europe and Portuguese America and, especially, the marranos’ antithetic condition. We continued presenting a short biography of Father Antônio Vieira, pointing out his relationship with the jewish’s and the marranos and his conflict writer the inquisition. Finally, we studied “Saint Roque’s Sermon”, aiming at finding in his text, rich in analogies, the jewish’s and the marranos’ socio-cultural representations to jesuitic epoch. Our main concern is to point out a determining factor to these representations. Such factor is “Judas” money , condition without which the jewish’s and the marranos don’t guarantee social inclusion in the baroque world.
