dc.description.abstract | Hormonal alterations can change the periodontal clinical status. The postmenopausal period is associated with significant lower on estrogens and progesterone levels. These alterations can change inflammatory clinical status and/or clinical course of progression of the periodontitis. The hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has as aim recover the effects these changes and lower the symptom and morbidity associated it. The aim this study was to evaluate the effect of HRT on periodontal status in postmenopausal women. The sample is 90 women on post-menopausal, between 44 and 77 years old, selected in a secondary data base. Postmenopausal was considered the menstrual absence by at least 12 months or due the uterus removal at least by 6 months. HRT use was evaluated by relate on questionnaire and this information confirmed by review medical record. Three definitions periodontitis were used: a) generalized severe chronic periodontitis was defined as the presence of the ≥ 30% sites with clinical attachment loss (CAL) ≥5mm; b) severe periodontitis was defined as ≥2 interproximal sites with CAL ≥6mm (not at the same tooth) and ≥1 interproximal site with probing deep ≥5mm, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) e American Academy of Periodontology (AAP); c) full-mouth mean CAL (continuous). Comparisons between groups were evaluated with independent t-test. Categorical variables were evaluated thought qui-square test. Significant statistically differences were not observed for any periodontal variable between groups. Less CAL was observed on group that used HRT, but without difference significant statistically after adjust for age. Once two established criteria to classify periodontitis were compared between groups significant differences were not observed. Can be concluded that periodontal status of postmenopausal women was not changed by HRT use. | |
