Resumen
Aim: This cross-sectional study evaluated the periodontal status, and their correlation
with hematological parameters, in patients with different types of Leukemia.
Methods: Patients with leukemia, at any stage of treatment, and with minimum age of
14 years were eligible. Edentulous patients, with orthodontic appliances, with
psychomotor disturbances, requiring antibiotic prophylaxis, and/or using any
medication associated with gingival enlargement were excluded. Two trained and
calibrated examiners evaluated Seymour Index (SI), Plaque Index, Gingival Index
(GI), Probing Pocket Depth, Bleeding on Probing and Clinical Attachment Loss
(CAL), and conducted a structured interview. Medical data were obtained from
medical records, and hematological data were collected from the blood test
performed on the same day as the periodontal examination.
Results: Were evaluated 68 patients (mean age=43.4). Inflammatory periodontal
parameters were in agreement with the plaque accumulation, and were not
influenced by the type of leukemia. CAL, however, showed statistically lower values
for acute lymphoid leukemia. Oral manifestation at the time of diagnosis was reported
by 45% of patients. Correlation between periodontal and hematological parameters
was not observed. Correlation between SI and GI was statistically significant
(rs=0.47,p=0.00).
Conclusion: Periodontal status generally was similar in different types of leukemia,
and not associated with hematological parameters.
