Resumen
The objective of this study was to verify the depression profile in the hemiplegic group
of the extension program "HUSM Hemiplegia: a group therapy proposal", developed at the
Physical Therapy Department of Santa Maria University Hospital. It was a cross-sectional
observational study with quantitative approach using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to
evaluate the depression level, Modified Rankin Scale to trace the disability level, and physical
therapy assessment protocol developed by the extension program to delineate the clinical and
socio-demographic profile in 13 hemiplegic post-stroke. The studied sample had a high
frequency of individuals with some depression degree (46.2%); however the majority did not
show levels of depression (53.8%). Almost all the studied (61.5%) had some disability level
and the largest frequency was found in the moderate level of disability. The conclusion was
that the sample did not show a significant depression profile, but the frequency of those who
had some depression level was high, what indicates the need of monitoring these patients on
the aspects related to mood disorders, such as depression, facilitating the forwarding to
diagnosis and treatment.
