Resumen
Stroke is one of the biggest causes of death and disability in the world. Due to this high number of deaths it is necessary to use epidemiological research to generate information so that health managers can act consciously in the quest to improve the quality of life of the population. The objective of this study was to describe the trend of cases of death due to stroke in the state of Rio Grande do Sul from 1979 to 2014. For this purpose, a simple linear regression analysis was performed on the data collected in the system of DATASUS, through the Mortality Information System (SIM). After the elaboration and validation of the regression model, the Mann-Kendall test was used to test if there was any trend in the data. As a result, it was observed that with the aging of the population of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the number of deaths due to stroke increased, being a little more frequent in women than in men. It is expected that the obtained results can contribute to generate information and facilitate decision making by health managers.
