Resumen
This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of schoolchildren through the body mass index (BMI), classifying them according to Conde and Monteiro (2006) to investigate the perception of body image by Stunkard Silhouette Scale. Still, we sought to reflect on the contributions that the PE teacher can give to build a positive body image through their classes. For this, the sample was 113 students aged 7 to 12 years, 60 girls and 53 boys. It was observed 62.9% of the students are evaluated with normal weight, while 20.3% are overweight and 16.8% were obese. Out of 113, 32% are satisfied with their body image while 68% are dissatisfied. Of those 32% who are satisfied with their body image, 20 are girls and 16 are boys. While dissatisfied, 40 are girls and 37 are boys. Of the 77 students dissatisfied, 33.8% signaled willingness to have greater silhouette (14 males and 12 females), while 66.2% would like to have a lower profile (23 are boys and 28 are girls). Crossing the data of body perception between the sexes was not obtained significant difference (p = 0.794), demonstrating that male and female students tended to have a similar perception about their body image. It is suggested creating pedagogic practices encouraging the body to reframe reduce the number of dissatisfied students with their self-image and the use of other evaluation instruments of body awareness.
