This paper presented the identification of necessary elements for the development of computerized systems for archival description. It involves archival principles that guide the description activity as well as the existing rules and references on the subject, related in the chapter Theoretical Framework. The methodology for this research is based on a descriptive study of the document Act of University Presidency (Ato da Reitoria) from Federal Institute of Higher Education and the Inquiry Forms (Formulários de Consulta) from its Documentation Center. The work is carried out through the topics: the production contexts of the studied set of documents; the NOBRADE’s description elements referenced in the abovementioned Act; analysis of survey forms; the entry of search data and information retrieval; computerized systems for archival description; and development elements these computerized systems. These topics were sequentially unfolded in order to achieve a consistency of the necessary steps to identify the essential components and features for the representation of archival information, aimed to the creation of computerized systems for archival description. The outcome of the work was the ratification of what is essential, mainly in the current context, for professionals of Archival and Computer Sciences to work in a coalescing way.
