Resumen
The aim of this study was to conduct a historical survey of the development of health care systems in Brazil. This study aimed to identify the main events in shaping the Brazilian health policy since the early twentieth century through the emergence of public health campaigns, health care linked to insurance and the movement for health reform coming from the implementation of the Unified Health System (SUS). The methodology used in this study was exploratory since it was a literature review on the database of the Virtual Health Library (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde - BVS). The online search was performed in the first semester of 2011, and had as a temporal delimitation the period from 1986 to 2011. The online search was held by the integrated method of research, using the following keywords: public health, health care system, Brazil. Three highlight themes were found: public health campaigns, social security and Unified Health System. This study showed a historical review describing the historical process of building assistance health in Brazil, providing a new vision of historical events involved in this process.
