A presença de bráquetes ortodônticos influencia no desempenho do clareamento dentário?

Abstract

Dental bleaching and orthodontic treatment are the dental procedures responsible for the patients’ satisfaction with their dental appearance. However, the association of treatments is unclear in the literature. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the presence of bracket on the tooth color alteration after dental bleaching at different times. A sample of 132 human teeth was randomly distributed in two groups: bleached with the presence of brackets (test) and without the presence (control), being evaluated in two times: 3 and 6 weeks. During this period, the specimens received daily applications of 10% carbamide peroxide for 4h. The color readings were performed with a spectrophotometer by a blinded examiner prior to bracket bonding and after the bleaching period and respective removal of the bracket and composite from the enamel surface. The data were submitted to the Variance Analysis of two factors. The factor of presence of brackets was significant (p <0.001), as well as the time factor of bleaching (p <0.001). However, no interaction was observed between the factors (p = 0.734). The present study showed that the presence of brackets interfered negatively in the tooth whitening process and that the increase in bleaching time was not sufficient to compensate this interference. Therefore, dental bleaching protocols in patients with bracket bonding should be rethought, as well as the commercialization of whitening products for orthodontic patients.
