Resumen
The present study is exploratory, descriptive and analytical with a qualitative approach. Its
objective was to understand daily life from the point of view of the subjects undergoing
oncological treatment and the interference of pain in the performance of their occupations. The
research was carried out from September to November 2018 at a cancer unit of a university
hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Eight subjects (six men and two women) aged 55 to
75 years, over 18 years, using an alternative feeding route, with a confirmed oncological
diagnosis. For the information collection, an instrument was used consisting of 29 open
questions, including the use of Visual Analog Pain Scale (EVA), field diary and the proposal of
representation of its pain by means of drawing. The information obtained was transcribed in its
entirety and analyzed in the narrative analysis modality. The narratives reveal how limiting it is to
live daily with pain and indicate how significant it is to be able to maintain performance in
engagements that have been engaged throughout life. Therefore, in order to understand daily life,
a qualified listening is necessary, recognizing what the other brings as a legitimate and singular
need for health. Therefore, it is recommended the use of strategies that stimulate the creative
potential, valuing the subject and its histories and pain relief with non-pharmacological strategies
by the professionals, therefore, we will be closer to a model of integral health care.
