This study aims to analyze the self-perception of body image of people with Machado-
Joseph Cerebellar Ataxia. The sample consists of eight (08) adults, with Machado-
Joseph Cerebellar Ataxia, of both genders, aged between 40 and 60 years. As
instruments for collecting data was used: Demographic Data Sheet, Questionnaire on
Disability and Physical Activity; Questionnaire on the Perception of Body Image before
the outbreak of the disease; Quiz: My Body Image. The study results revealed that
before the onset of symptoms of the disease, the participants had a satisfactory and selfperception
after onset showed a distorted body image. The time of onset of illness affect
self-perception of body image and there was no significant difference in perception of
body image between the sexes of people who have ataxia. The physical activity
interfered with the perception of body image of these people. It was concluded that to
study with people who have this disease, knowledge of body image is important to
allow yourself to see these again the body as a whole, which moves and can still be
exploited.
