Our work starts from the idea that the journalistic discourse is manufacturer and producer of meanings about social reality. With this, we try to understand what are the meanings related in the journalistic discourse in reports dealing with environmental disasters. Our goal is to understand, through theoretical contributions of Discourse Analysis and Sociology, who is responsible, what are the causes of disasters and are portrayed as victims of these events in the journalistic discourse. Our corpus is composed of 10 reports of landslides in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro in 2011, selected the magazine Carta Capital, Época, IstoÉ and Veja. We bring theoretical definitions about the journalistic discourse, Environmental Journalism, the conceptions about catastrophe and disaster and the news coverage of these extreme events. For our analysis, we construct an analytical protocol that was applied in two stages. First, we grasp the discursive sequences (SDs) that fit in the statements proposed by Valencio (2010), with the aim of analyzing the senses on victims. Secondly, we built two other statements to complement the first, analyzing how the journalistic discourse builds the causes of the accident and the responsibility for it. Through the analysis of nine magazines and 157 discursive sequences in total, we find that the meanings constructed by the discourse of the magazines are largely related to the government's fault for its omissions and negligence. The environment is seen as the main culprit second by disasters. As for the victims, even fewer sequences are also found guilty for his own situation, among other peculiarities.
