Thyroid tumors comprise 1 % to 4 % of all canine cancers and is more common in dogs of medium to large breeds . Apparently there is no sex predilection . Canine thyroid carcinomas are more common than adenomas , and these are usually unilateral tumors. In dogs most thyroid cancers are not functional, or do not produce thyroid hormones. Surgical resection has been the treatment of choice for mobile tumors or adhesions only in the most superficial tissues. The various complications that may arise from unilateral thyroidectomy, hypothyroidism have been reported commonly in humans, with few reports in veterinary medicine. This report aims to describe the case of hypothyroidism in a dog with thyroid carcinoma underwent unilateral thyroidectomy , reporting the clinical and laboratory consequences elapsed 50 days postoperatively .
