The objective of the present work was to evaluate the of the treatment with injectable hydroxocobalamin and ferric hydroxide upon packed cell volume (PCV), reticulocite count, hemoglobin (HB), plasma albumin(ALB) and total protein (TP) and weight gain on naturally parasitized lambs. Forty 3 to 5 month old male and female Corriedale lambs were used. Animals were selected based on the following parameters: body condition score 2 to 3, Famacha 3 to 4, fecal egg count between 2000 and 12000 epg. Animals were allocated into four groups: Group 1 (control) with no treatment; Group 2 treated with 56.250μg hydroxocobalamin; Group 3: 500mg dextran iron; and Group 4: the combination of groups 2 and 3. Blood samples were collected at days zero, 14 and 35 and assayed for ALB, PT, PCV and HB. Reticulocyte count was performed at days zero and 14. Body weight was recorded on days zero and 35. No differences were detected among groups in each experimental time. We conclude that treatment with hyroxocobalamin and/or ferric hydroxide at the used dosages does not affect protein or red blood cell profile.
