E: to investigate the main variables, to report the parameters of treatment and show the results and conclusions of scientific texts which have involved the use of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) on post-operative cardiac surgery. METHODOLOGY: we have included scientific papers published in the last 10 years, which were in English and Portuguese in the electronic databases PUBMED, LILACS, SCIELO and PEDro. We have not considered case studies, experimental studies or reviews. RESULTS: NIV, mainly in two pressure levels, has been proven an efficient resource in reverting lung dysfunction, in preventing cardiac surgery postoperative complications and with a better result when applied earlier and for a longer time. CONCLUSION: literature shows that the prophylactic use of NIV can have positive results. However, there is no consensus in literature on the ideal parameters and on the adequate time for its therapy.
