During the operation of the electrical power system (SEP), there are often protection failures that can result in shutdowns in the power supply, causing a reduction in quality of service. This is not common, but it happens because the protection of the SEP has not been correctly scaled and are usually errors resulting from relay settings that were not correctly commissioned. In this sense, the objective of this work is to present a methodology for the design of the overcurrent protection system in a SEP and for the commissioning of digital relays from the data obtained from fault simulation. Thus, a guide was developed for validation and comparison of the results obtained through the analysis of the response times of the protection system in the software DIgSILENT Power Factory and commercial digital relays using a universal relay tester. The results obtained in a radial system show that the errors of the relay operation times are smaller than 5% for most faults analyzed..
