The focus of this study is to identify and analyze in scientific production the impact of compulsory hospitalization on the care of people who use alcohol and other drugs. For this, a review of the literature was made, based on theses and dissertations found in the CAPES Portal. The corpus of this bibliographic review consisted of 15 studies. From the content analysis of the articles selected, the following categories emerged: Advances and Retreats in Public Policies and Drug Legislation in Brazil; and Characterization of Alcohol users and other drugs and the Right to Autonomy in the face of Compulsory Internment. Given the results obtained, we verified that the investigations about compulsory hospitalization are recent and incomplete. There is little evidence to support the conclusion about the efficacy of this treatment modality in psychosocial rehabilitation or in the long-term behavioral change of the individual. Still, we need to think about strategies to change from conception to paradigm models centered on medical and legal power, realizing the need for other forms of care for people who use alcohol and other drugs.
