Resumen
Smoking is one of the major causes of illness and death. Cigarette smoking can lead to numerous health problems as well as heavy reliance on nicotine use. Smoking cessation programs are essential in Brazil for reducing the prevalence of smoking in the country. The aim of this program is to encourage behavioral change of patients through the cessation of smoking, favoring a consequent reduction of the damages caused by smoking. It is also intended to arouse the interest of academics to act in the cessation. The program will be developed through cessation support groups. The groups will have weekly frequency in the first month, fortnightly in the second month and monthly from
the third month until one year. One group per semester will be started. Support medicines will be provided by the 4th Regional Health Coordination. At the end of each semester, a meeting will be held with academics to discuss smoking cessation. The program will initially have a duration of 30 months. The implementation of smoking cessation groups generates real expectations of satisfactory results for the community, since the expansion of the care network is necessary for a wider coverage of the smoking population,
resulting in a decrease in the prevalence of smokers in the city.
