Resumen
Background: the relations between the phonological loop of working memory and language processing in childhood started to be investigated at the time of Working Memory Model, initially proposed by Baddeley & Hitch (1974), was adopted as theoretical approach to evaluate the role of short-term memory in language acquisition. Objective: to show a wide-ranging and non-sistematic review about the role of working memory phonological loop in language processing in childhood, since it creation until present-days. For this, concepts about memory and learning will be presented, followed by a detailed description of the working memory model, especially of it phonological component, and, in the end, there will be shown study results about the association of phonological loop and language acquisition in childhood. Results: the revised researches about the relation of phonological loop and language processing in childhood contributed to a change in the mean function of phonological component. Now, it has the role of support the learning of new phonological forms, more than simply memorize familiar words forms. Conclusion: although the existence of a wide range of data concerning phonological working memory, it has been difficult to specify their specific role in normal and pathological language development. So, future studies with the objective to characterize the phonological loop skills better and to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation strategies are necessary.
